A miracle happened this April: Jacob started watching Grey’s Anatomy with me. Why is this a miracle? Because it literally just happened. After a long day and thirty minutes of scrolling through the same old Netflix suggestions, Jacob said words I never thought I’d hear: “Do you just want to watch Grey’s Anatomy?”
My jaw dropped. I sat silent, stunned, for what seemed like an eternity. “Are you serious right now?”
“Yeah, I mean you watch it all the time and I kind of know what’s happening. I might as well watch with you.”
And so we watched Grey’s Anatomy. And now we’ve watched almost 2 full seasons together. Miracle.
A few months into quarantine last year I started Grey’s Anatomy from the very beginning for the second time. It’s a big commitment. But the early seasons are iconic and nothing shouts COMFORT like re-watching the shows you know so well. I stopped when life became busy in the fall. But, like clockwork, every spring I crave the rainy, moody feeling that only Grey’s can provide. So I started watching again.
Being the book nerd I am, I thought one almost-Spring evening: I wonder if there’s a book like Grey’s Anatomy. I mean surely of all the books in the world someone somewhere has attempted to turn the Grey’s vibe into a novel. About two seconds of googling and I found Queen of Hearts by Kimmery Martin. The first review on Goodreads said “if you love Grey’s Anatomy, you’ll love this book.” And they weren’t wrong.

What I Liked:
I often tell Jacob that marketing was designed for me specifically. I’ve bought a ridiculous amount of dumb shit off of Facebook and Instagram ads because they just get me. I also always buy books based on covers. Though I know nothing about marketing, I’m pretty sure book covers are a book marketing tool. Well, the book cover of Queen of Hearts is SO GORGEOUS. If nothing else, buy this book and display the teal and floral artwork on your bookshelf.
This book is just fun! It really is Grey’s anatomy in book form. The two main characters are doctors, wives, moms. Life is great for Zadie and Emma until someone from their med school days suddenly returns. With the return of Nick Xenokostas comes drama. Secrets are uprooted and friendships are tested. Basically, it’s packed with the drama you’d find in the show. There’s sad medical drama. There’s steamy on-call-room doctor relationships. I loved how Kimmery intertwined their med school days and their current professional and personal lives.
Kimmery Martin is a doctor turned author, so the medical parts are accurate. She paints a picture of medical school and the life of a doctor from personal experience which adds to the rawness.
What I Didn’t Like:
There’s not much to write in this section! I enjoyed the read. If anything, I think the book could have more emotional depth. I was sucked into the drama for sure, but my emotions weren’t as strong as they usually are with rom-com/women’s fiction books.
If you like medical dramas, add this one to the TBR list! The Queen of Hearts perfectly captures that rainy, moody, Grey’s Anatomy vibe. You become close with the characters and the drama is thick in this one. Plus, the cover is beautiful.
Rating:
I rate this one 4/5 stars (but if I wasn’t a Grey’s fan, I’d probably rate it a 3, for reference).
